Well Control Workshop
On Monday, March 13, 2017, Komar Research Center with the cooperation of Petroleum Engineering Department (PTE) of Komar University of Science and Technology and SPE Erbil Chapter has hosted a workshop on “Well Control” for faculties and students of the PTE. Engineers, Mr. Soran Mohammed, Mr. Suwar Tabalani and Mr. Rebeen Qader, from TAQA Drilling Company, were the guest speakers.
The topics of the workshop were:
- Well control equipment
- API Recommended Practices and API Specifications
- Introduction to formation pressures
- Hydrostatic pressure
- Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD)
- Causes of kicks
- Kick indications
- Shut-in procedures
- Kill methods and kill problems
The workshop helps the PTE students to learn more about the industry and start their careers after graduation. Students will also get a realistic expectation of what they will be doing as drilling engineers. This workshop, similar to others in the past, emphasizes on fusion of academia with industry.
At the end of the workshop, the speakers were awarded “Appreciation Certificate’ by KRC and chairman of PTE.

Profile of guest speakers:
SORAN MOHAMMED
Soran has joined TAQA Iraq as a Drilling Engineer in June 2014. He is based at the Erbil office and Atrush block, Soran has more than eight years of experience in Oil Sector. Soran Joined to TAQA Iraq from Oren Hydrocarbons in Iraq, where he served as Operations Manager. Before that, he worked as a Night Field Engineer with OILSERV, working primarily in the Basra/ rumaila Field. Prior work includes as well, Drilling Fluid Engineer with MI-swaco/Schlumberger, Refinery Supervisor with DNO, and Refinery Worker at the Sulaimaniya Refinery. He earned BSc in Chemical Engineering from Baghdad University and is a member of the Society of Engineers, Iraq and Society of Engineers, Kurdistan. Soran Holds Level 4 IWCF certificates.
SUWAR TALABANI
Suwar has joined TAQA Iraq as a Drilling Engineer in July 2014. He is based at the Erbil office and Atrush block. Prior to his appointment with TAQA Iraq, he was a Wireline & Perforating Field Engineer working in Erbil and Basra for Halliburton/Boots & Coots. Previously, he was a Well Testing Trainee Field Engineer for Schlumberger in Basra. He also has worked as a Drilling Fluids Engineer for Petrochem Performance Chemicals in the Kurdistan Region, and a Drilling Warehouse Store Worker for Dana Gas-Crescent Petroleum in the Kurdistan Region. Suwar holds a BSc in Fuel and Energy Engineering from the College of Technology, Kirkuk and Holds Level 4 IWCF certificates.
REBEEN QADER
Rebeen has joined TAQA Iraq as a Drilling Engineer in June 2014 He is based at the Erbil office and Atrush block. Rebeen Has more than five years of experience in Oil Sector. He previously worked as a Drilling Engineer Trainee with Western Zagros Resources Ltd. in Erbil. Formerly, he was a Field Engineer (Cementing and Coil Tubing Section) with National Petroleum Services in Erbil, and prior to that worked as a Sales Engineer with First Iraqi Group.bHe earned an MSc in Chemical Engineering from Curtin University in Australia and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Technology, Baghdad. Rebeen Holds Level 4 IWCF certificates.
