A Seminar on “SHE, ROBOT: MECHANISATION OF OPHELIA IN SHAKESPEARE’S HAMLET”
On Thursday 25th February 2021, Asst. Prof. Dr. Zanyar Faiq Saeed, the chairperson of the Department of English at Komar University of Science and Technology, gave a seminar about one of his research studies. The seminar was titled “SHE, ROBOT: MECHANISATION OF OPHELIA IN SHAKESPEARE’S HAMLET”.
Dr. Zanyar explained how Ophelia, a female character, is gradually objectified into an externally controlled machine by three male characters (her brother, her father, and her lover) and how she/it finally commits suicide/breaks down in the absence of the external controllers.
Dr. Zanyar also shed light on the kind of society that produces such male characters who belittle the female characters and prevent them from expressing themselves and having their own life choices. The seminar ended with a discussion between the audience and the presenter.
