4th Meeting on Iraqi Seismic Code Update Held at Komar University of Science and Technology
On October 17th, 2024, the 4th meeting on the Iraqi Seismic Code Update was successfully held at Komar University of Science and Technology, bringing together prominent experts, academic representatives, and officials from across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The focus of the meeting was to review and enhance the ongoing work to update Iraq’s seismic regulations, critical for improving structural safety in earthquake-prone areas.
The event commenced with a formal welcome by Professor Dr. Salahaddin Saed Ali, President of Komar University, and the university’s Vice President, Professor Dr. Kawis Aziz Faraj. Both expressed their full support for the seismic code update, reaffirming KUST’s key role in initiating this vital project through its first symposium on seismic safety in the Kurdistan Region. They emphasized the importance of maintaining strong collaboration with the committee, facilitated through Dr. Ako Rashed, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, and Dr. Sardasht S. Weli, a seismic and blast design specialist at Komar University of Science and Technology.
The representative from Prime Minister Mr. Mohamad Shia’ Sudani’s office addressed the attendees, extending his support for the project and emphasizing its significance for Iraq’s future.
The Ministry of Urban and Construction representative provided an update on the progress of the Iraqi seismic code revisions, reviewing current standards and the steps being taken to enhance and modernize them. The committee members, guest speakers, and attendees engaged in several in-depth discussions aimed at improving the new version of the seismic code. A strong focus was placed on ensuring active participation from Kurdistan Region representatives, particularly through the involvement of local seismology centers.
The meeting concluded after four hours of productive dialogue, with all participants reaffirming their commitment to continuing this important work. The committee extended their gratitude to KUST for its exceptional hospitality and ongoing dedication to advancing seismic safety in Iraq.
