Komar University of Science and Technology Hosts Workshop on UN Sustainable Development Goals
On May 28, 2024, Komar University of Science and Technology (KUST) conducted a workshop to introduce the university’s newly formed Sustainable Development Committee.
The workshop began with an opening speech by Dr. Twana Abdulrazaq, Director of Quality Assurance. Dr. Abdulrazaq highlighted KUST’s leadership in education, emphasizing the university’s student-centered approach, innovative assessments, and diverse study programs. He stressed the importance of further international engagement and urged every KUST member to contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Dr. Ahmed then took the stage to discuss the formation and objectives of the Sustainable Development Committee. He emphasized the collective responsibility in achieving goals such as waste management, reducing water consumption, creating a sustainable learning environment, and managing energy use.
Following this, Dr. Nashmil Abdullah from the Pharmacy Department reviewed the progress made and future plans for sustainable development at KUST. She detailed the responsibilities of the committee members and affirmed that efforts towards these goals had been ongoing prior to the committee’s formal establishment.
Dr. Hamid explained the committee’s organizational chart, outlining each member’s role in achieving the SDGs. Mr. Mohammed, Director of HR and Admin, discussed KUST’s practices in gender equality and women’s empowerment, as well as the importance of water recycling and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Dr. Rawia Tahrir, Mr. Mohammed Abdulmaged Acting Director of the IT Unit, further highlighted the significance of collective efforts in reducing paper usage and promoting the sustainable development program.
Dr. Noel Thomas, Chairperson of the Biomedical Science Department, spoke about the establishment of an emergency response committee, emphasizing the well-being of all students, staff, and faculty members.
The workshop concluded with a Q&A session, where attendees’ comments and questions enriched the discussion, contributing positively to the workshop’s outcomes.
