English Department Arranges Seminar for Students on American and Kurdish Sign Language Systems
On April 22, 2024, Ms. Sivan, a faculty member at the Department of English Language and Literature at Komar University of Science and Technology arranged a seminar for students of the department about Kurdish and American sign language systems. The event was put together as part of a course titled “Introduction to Language”. The seminar was delivered by Ms. Hannah Hoot titled ‘An Unlikely Tale of an American Girl Engaging the Deaf Community in Kurdistan’.
During the seminar, Ms. Hannah took students through her story and motivation of how she got involved with the deaf community in Kurdistan. She also focused on the differences between differences that exist between different sign language systems. The seminar encouraged students to learn about sign language as an addition to their language repertoire. The session was interactive throughout with students asking questions and participating in thoughtful discussions.
