Komar University of Science and Technology celebrates mother tongue day

On February 21, 2023, in an event, Komar University of Science and Technology celebrated the occasion of mother tongue day. In the event, a group of activities were presented by KUST’s Production Unit which included interviews from faculty members on the importance of preserving one’s mother tongue; as well as a collection of music in different dialects of the Kurdish language. During the event, a presentation on the importance of preserving mother tongue was given by Dr. Hemn Karim, a faculty member at Komar University. Following his presentation, a talk was given by Mr. Sdiq Salih Ahmed, member of Zhin center’s documentation and research. In his talk, Mr. Sdiq talked about the efforts made by poets and literary figures who worked to keep the Kurdish language alive since the beginning of the 20th century. At the end, he discussed the issues facing the Kurdish language after the uprising of the Kurdistan Region. The event ended with discussions and questions from the audience on the importance of mother tongue for one’s identity.
