KUST holds International Dialogue on Climate Change and Water Scarcity and their Impact on the Environment of Iraq
On August 28, 2023, Komar University of Science and Technology held an international dialogue on Climate Change and Water Resources Scarcity and their Impact on the Environment in Iraq. The dialogue was in collaboration with the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue and in the presence of the representatives of the Minister of Water Resources of the Federal Government, Mr. Awn Dhiab, the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources of the KRG, Ms. Begard Talabani, and the Governor of Sulaimani, Dr. Haval Abubakir. The event was also attended by academics, faculty members, and government officials from the Federal and Kurdistan Regional governments.
During the event, Dr. Salahaddin Saeed Ali, the president of Komar University of Science and Technology, gave his opening remarks, followed by speeches from Mr. Hatim Hameed Hussein, representative to the Ministry of Water Resources of Baghdad, Mr. Rzgar Hamad Khdir, representative to the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of the KRG, Ms. Rouba Ghaidoun from the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue, Geneva, Switzerland.
The speeches were followed by two presentations by Professor Dr. Nadhir Al-Ansari from Lulea University of Science and Technology in Sweden and Professor Dr. Zoran Stevanovec from the University of Belgrade. The focus of the presentations was on water scarcity and groundwater utilization.
After the presentations, a panel discussion was held in which the panelists and attendees discussed the issues related to climate change and water scarcity in Iraq, suggesting solutions to the government officials who took part in the discussions.
