KUST hosted the First International Medical Symposium in Kurdistan
On 11th and 12th May 2019, Komar University of Science and Technology (KUST) hosted the First International Medical Symposium in Kurdistan. The symposium was conducted in collaboration with IRCCS San Gallicano Dermatological Institute, Regina Elena National Cancer Institute, and the International Institute of Kurdish Culture from Italy, and Hiwa (Cancer) Hospital from Kurdistan-Iraq. About 110 doctors and researchers had registered to participate in the Symposium.
The symposium tackled some important goals. The first goal was to discuss health issues related to dermatology, oncology and diet. The second goal was to acquire and share knowledge, skills and experience in science and technology, promoting critical thinking and friendly faculty-student interaction, encouraging cooperation among KUST, private industries and the government to improve education quality and student learning and to meet the needs of the public and private sectors. The third and last goal was to improve the quality of life in the region and Iraq as well.
Prof. Dr. Salahalddin Saeed Ali, the President of Komar University of Science and Technology, opened the first day of the symposium with a speech. The President declared that KUST has plans to be a leading medical institution in Iraq by working with advanced equipment and according to international standards. He also highly appreciated his Excellency Mr. Bruno Pasquino, the Italian Ambassador to Iraq, and the Italian experts and friends for their generous support. He was then followed by his Excellency Mr Pasquino; Mr. Soran Ahmed, the Secretary General of the Kurdish Institute in Italy; Dr. Mohammed Hussein, the representative of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research; Mr. Giuliano Lancioni, the Vice President of the Kurdish Institute in Italy; and finally Prof. Aldo Morrone, the Scientific Director of San Gallicano Dermatological Institute, Rome, Italy.
The first day consisted of only one session that was about “Skin at the Border”. It started with two guest speakers, Dr. Giulia Veronesi and Dr. Aldo Morrone. This was followed by a discussion between the speakers and the audience about the topics presented. By the end of the first day, the team had visited Komar university of Science and Technology.
The second day started at 9:30 a.m. and consisted of sessions 2-5. The second session was on “Management and Clinical Approaches”. The speakers were Dr. Najmaddin Khoshnaw, Dr. Roberto Biagini, Dr. Ali Omar and Dr. Halgurd Salih Jaf. The third session was on “Environment and Cancer”. The speakers were Dr. Hersh Abdul Hama-Karim, Dr. Shanaz Ghafou, and Dr. Roberto Biagini. The fourth session was on “Skin Diseases and Food” and the only speaker was Dr. Aldo Morrone. The fifth and last session was on “Cancer and Food”. The speakers consisted of Dr. Vittorio Roberti, Dr. G. Valmadre, and Dr. Roberto Biagini.
The sessions ended at 4:30 p.m. Then the President of KUST awarded the Italian physicians certificates of appreciation. The symposium ended at 5:00 p.m. After that, the team visited Hiwa Hospital.
