A Seminar on the Impact of Expansive Soil on Light Structures
On May 31st, 2016, as part of faculty seminar session, a seminar titled “The Foundation of Light Weight Structures on Expansive Soil” was presented in Komar University by Dr. Younis Alshkane
Initially Dr Younis provided an insight into the impact of expansive soil on light structures. He then showed several evidences indicating that light structures where built on expansive soils are subjected to different type of cracks. These cracks can cause structure instability and failure.
He stated that, Most of the buildings in Kurdistan Region are constructed on expansive soils especially in Sulaimani areas, such as Raparin District. Design of foundations on an expansive soil site for structures is much more challenging than a non-expansive soil site due to excessive amount of settlement and consolidation. Therefore he mentioned that a need for an efficient design is a must to mitigate the soil expansion.
The presenter concluded his seminar with several foundation solutions that can reduce the effect of expansive soils on our future buildings.
At the end the director of KUST Research Centre, Dr. Hiwa Sidiq awarded Dr. Younis with a certificate of appreciation for his presentation.
